Separate the marine visit from getting to the dock

Hol Chan Marine Reserve protects reef, seagrass and mangrove habitats off Ambergris Caye. Shark Ray Alley is a distinct part of the protected marine area. These are offshore destinations: a golf cart cannot take you to the snorkeling site or replace the boat excursion.

Choose an independent operator and check the actual itinerary. A trip described broadly as a reef outing may include different stops. Ask whether Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley are both included and what the operator needs to know about your group before booking.

Get an exact departure or pickup point

Ask whether you should meet at a town office, a dock or your accommodation for collection by boat. The reserve’s administrative office is not the underwater attraction, and a provider’s general business address may differ from your departure point.

Use the operator name, confirmed meeting location and check-in instructions when arranging land transport. If the operator already collects you by boat, a separate cart trip may be unnecessary. Agree where the cart will remain while you are away; do not assume a dock includes parking.

Prepare for the booked activity

Discuss participation, equipment and any access needs with the tour provider. Confirm what to bring, how the day is organised and how weather or reserve instructions could affect the plan. Let the provider assess the activity rather than relying on another traveler’s experience.

Keep personal documents and electronics protected, and follow the guide’s instructions around marine life. Wildlife photographs show past encounters; they cannot promise what you will see. Keep enough flexibility for a changed itinerary or return arrangement without rushing the boat or land handover.

Use Rio for the confirmed land portion

Rio rents carts for suitable island-road journeys, including a trip to an agreed land meeting point. Boat tickets, guide services and reserve arrangements belong to the independently booked operator and are not included through a cart request.

Confirm your pickup and return times with Rio, taking the operator’s own timing into account. Free hotel delivery is available; provide the full accommodation name and agree the feasible handover point. For boat-only accommodation, coordinate an island-side meeting rather than expecting a cart to cross the water.
